A Roundish House

We bought a round house that we wanted to make cozier — so we added 2.5″ of polyiso fiberglass-backed foam to the inside walls, set furring strips every 16″ (try to do the math on a round wall) and then hung 3/8″ sheetrock.  All of this is being guided by Julian, a very forward thinking green builder and all around interesting guy.

Next steps: plaster the walls, install a kitchen.

Dahlias

Dahlias are beautiful flowering plants, but they are a massive pain when you are growing them in an area where you can get hurricane force winds.  Our solution for them is to tomato cage them when they go in the ground with a sturdy stake driven in through the cage.  Now, as the dahlias grow, I find myself driving in even longer stakes and constantly tying them back to their cages when they escape.

Newport Anachronisms, Pt 1

Today while clearing a huge mess of Convolvulus (bindweed/morning glory), Cynanchum (black swallow-wort),and various other messy plants I looked up and watched an airship pass over the property.  Then, I went back to quietly rooting out weeds.

Plants for the yard

I picked up a few plants at Opus Nursery today and stuck them in the backyard.  I really have to get a plan for back there.

  • Erigeron pulchellus var. pulchellus ‘Lynnhaven Carpet’
  • Arundo donax ‘Golden Chain’ (we’ll see how this does…I’ve heard it isnt’ the greatest)
  • Arundo donax ‘Peppermint Stick’ (this is maybe planted a little too close to the fenceline – we’ll see what happens)
  • Rabdosia (unknown cultivar — have to wait for flowering)
  • Hakonechloa macra  ‘Beni Kaze’
